- I don't see how, or the programs using such a screen aren't using the provided
- OS functions.

- I know, but what percentage of people actually are into video? Certainly on
- the clones this is a very small market.

-
- No, 16-bit is practically the minimum. Except on Amiga that is, where people
- are forced to use little numbers of colors to keep the machine from becoming
- dead-slow.

-
- What nifty effects require an Alpha Channel? Playing MPEG video while having
- some sprites overlayed doing a StreetFighter immitation? I believe CD^32 did
- this quite nicely too. Don't you mean multiple playfields?

-
- Not for Games, a 640x256x256 screen eats just as much bandwidth as
- 320x256x16bit (both in 15KHz).
-
- LO> This is exactly why C= had to implement Ham8.
-
- I know, HAM was there because they couldn't handle the real thing, it has
- always been that way.
-
- Actually I think the real reason was that they didn't implement 16-bit is that
- they would be forced to go chunky (having 16 bitplanes would be completely
- ridiculous)
-
- LO> This does not, in any way, remove the potential usefullness of

-
- Years ago maybe, now they just decode MPEG streams real time or they store a
- picture lossy in a HAM-like format and decode that to a 24-bit screen.
-
- LO> : HAM8 is nice for displaying stills but for : anything else it is

-
- LO> Not entirely, it's great for animation.
-
- Certainly not when it comes to size as HAM images (and anims) don't compress
- very well.
